Nortern Rock is about to turn away depositors.
The London Sunday Times:
Northern Rock is within days of being forced to stop taking savings from new customers after a rush of deposits into the nationalised bank.
British deposit insurance is limited to £35,000, but deposits of any size with Northern Rock are now literally as safe as with the Bank of England. The stop is needed to protect the poor shivering capitalist banks from the unfair competition.

I suppose I've been invited to join real scholars on the list because my skills, acquired in a decade of technical assistance work in eastern Europe, include being able to ask faux-naïf questions like the exotic Persians and Chinese of eighteenth-century philosophical fiction.
