RBC Contest Winner Announced!

Given only this photo and the question “Where in the World is Professor Humphreys?“, an astute commentator (Toby) said:

It looks a bit like Ben Bulben, County Sligo, Ireland.

Which turns out to be only 100 km away from my location, one county over on the West Irish Coast (The photo is of Clare Island, seen from the shore of Clew Bay).

Well spotted Toby! I will be contacting you about arranging the charitable donation in your honour.

    1. Well, take alook at how the summarize Proust competition ends (link in my original post)

  1. Thanks … What a relief, I’ve been to Basingstoke, so I avoided a return visit.

Actually, after I entered, I immediately doubted myself. Being born and raised some 50 miles or so south of where you are, I can never remember seeing a fantastic sunset like that ever. It looks like a scene from The Ten Commandments. A touched-up postcard?

Anyway, enjoy Westport, and climb The Reek. Visit Joyce Country, named after my clannish ancestors, not the author.

    1. Hi Toby

Congratulations — you will have an email from my in your in box re: the charity.

The unretouched photo was taken with a non-fancy camera in the front yard of our friend’s cottage here in Rosmindle (now 40% quainter!). As you know this is a beautiful, peaceful place, and we have been blessed with unusually fine weather all week.

  2. For what it’s worth, I tried to win using Google Image Search, which produced a lot of photos of black horizons under beautifully tinted and streaked skies. It did not, however, come up with http://www.moherhousewestport.com/images/clareisland.jpg, which would certainly have given away the game. (I got this by supplementing the image search with the phrase “Clare Island.”)
