Nitpicking the Inaugural Address– a counting question

Am I missing something or did Obama count wrong when he said “44 Americans have now taken the Presidential Oath”?
(Grover Cleveland is conventionally counted as the 22nd and 24th presidents, which makes Obama the 44th)
Update: The Obama team supposedly has defended the inaccuracy as being less confusing than the truth… Not my idea of the level of respect for data we should expect from the new administration.

President Obama said that 44 Americans (including himself) have now taken the Presidential oath. The conventional numbering by which Obama is the 44th President includes Grover Cleveland as the 22nd and 24th presidents. (See wikipedia.

So shouldn’t he have said that 43 Americans have now taken the presidential oath?

Update On NPR’s Diane Rehm show one of the participants said they had called the Obama folks with this question and they said they knew of the discrepancy and that it was less confusing to get it wrong and say 44! Is the level of respect for data that we expect from the new administration?
