I for one saw the name Samuel Adams and tried to think of other famous former tax collectors who were also brewer-patriots.
I knew that Thomas Paine was a tax collector, but was unaware that Sam Adams was as well.
Oh, yes. On the Firesign Theatre’s Everything You Know Is Wrong, you can hear Ben Franklin refer to him as “Fiery Sam, the tax collector”.
Are publicans a prototype Republican? I guess they must be, since Jesus was so broadminded as to be willing to consort with publicans and sinners.
