Axis-of-evil Dep’t

Bush is meeting with the head of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, a party whose name says it all: SCIRI’s militia, the Badr Brigade, fought on the Iranian side of the Iran-Iraq war. Can you say “desperation”? I was sure you could.

Don’t worry, we’ve been told. Blood is thicker than theology, and an Iraq dominated by Shi’a extremists will still be hostile to Iran.

R-i-i-i-i-i-ght. George W. Bush is meeting with Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, the leader of SCIRI, the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (does the phrase “Islamic Revolution” ring a bell?), the one major Shi’a party not part of the governing coalition, in what seems to be a bid to get Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to boot Moqtada al-Sadr out of the coalition and rely instead on parliamentary support from SCIRI.

Of course it would be great to get the parent party of the Mahdi Army militia out of the government. But SCIRI is the parent of (or, in another view, merely the political wing of) the Badr Brigade, which is just as prone to killing random Sunni as the Madhdi Army and which actually fought on the Iranian side in the Iran-Iraq war.

  1. George W. Bush is meeting with "Islamofascist" terrorists in order to try to find a way to extricate himself from the brier patch of Iraq. I'm having a hard time keeping my tar babies straight.
