Judith Regan, recently fired by Rupert Murdoch, has decided to make a comeback. She says she has signed an exclusive contract with the Elders of Zion for a new book entitled, "If We Did It."

Am I alone in being struck by the use of the conditional rather than counterfactual mood in the would-have-been book's title? Were the publishers trying to tell us something?
