Next time you see some ex-general on TV talking about how awesome the Surge is, think of this story about the Pentagon effort to use retired brass, most of them feeding at the defense industry trough as lobbyists and board members, to mount a propaganda campaign.
Bryan Whitman, the Pentagon flack, uses what has become the standard Bush Administration defense: since the level of duplicity evident from the record is unbelievable, you shouldn't believe it.
The Pentagon defended its relationship with military analysts, saying they had been given only factual information about the war. “The intent and purpose of this is nothing other than an earnest attempt to inform the American people,” Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman, said.It was, Mr. Whitman added, “a bit incredible” to think retired military officers could be “wound up” and turned into “puppets of the Defense Department.”
