Why Does Anyone Listen to William Kristol?

Last week, William Kristol urged Republicans to go negative, and run a scorched-earth campaign focused on Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright.

In the last week, John McCain has done just that, and his campaign polls numbers dropped sharply.

So you might think that this would give Kristol pause about his own political wisdom. Au contraire.

On Fox News today, he huffed that going negative was "stupid" and in the New York Times Monday, he says that McCain should "fire the campaign."

This is the same guy who continues to see himself as a brilliant foreign policy thinker because he pushed for the Iraq War.

Maybe the dictionary should put a picture of Kristol next to its entry on Dunning-Kruger Effect.

UPDATE: And yes, I know that last week column was ostensibly simply a record of his conversation with Sarah Palin. If you believe that, I've got a bridge in Alaska to sell you.
