Close on nine years ago I wrote a book called Circles of Recovery that reviewed the scientific research on addiction-related self-help organizations. My publisher was in the UK (Cambridge University Press) but I am a US citizen and was living in the US at the time. When the book came out, I therefore filed the necessary paperwork to avoid double taxation of my meager royalties.

HM Treasury must have considered the decision rather carefully: A tax refund check for 35 quid arrived yesterday. Pints are on me…
