Mike Pence (R-IN) commits a classic Kinsley-gaffe on Fox News. His canned one-liner was “We’re trying to score a victory for the American people, not the Republican party.” But what he actually said was “We’re trying to score a victory for the Republican people.”
And yes, if you’re keeping score at home, that’s the same Mike Pence who crafted the anti-Planned-Parenthood language that – along with a proposal to gut the Clean Air Act – is one of the two big hang-ups preventing a deal. Again, Mr. Pence’s reality may differ, but if I were trying to “score a victory for the Republican people” I don’t think I’d want to fight the next election on contraception and clean air. Here’s hoping the Democrats accept the proffered gifts.
