Using budget reconciliation as a vehicle for health care reform would be clumsy. So the Democrats should do it only if the Republicans make it necessary. But they should make it clear that it takes 50 Senators plus the Vice-President to pass legislation, not 60.
The Medicaid-contraception-funding provision stripped from the stimulus bill could have prevented 12,000 abortions per year. Ross Douthat thinks that abortion is murder, but that preventing 12,000 of them is nothing to get excited about.
Newspapers would be more useful if reporters made fewer laughable technical errors. Such errors can be avoided (only?) by recruiting a network of experts to vet stories on the fly and spot the howlers. But that would require a re-thinking of current ideas about journalistic integrity and independence.
