It’s too bad, but I agree with Hilzoy: Tom Daschle has to go. Obama doesn’t have to be mean to him. “Tom Daschle is a good man, but he’s not the first good man to fall into bad company and learn bad ways. I’ll always value his friendship and welcome his advice, but it’s a new day in Washington and there’s no room in my Administration for the old ways.”
Look, the guy was making a ton of money and could easily afford to pay his taxes. And of all the possible excuses, “I thought having a personal car and driver was so ordinary that it never occurred to me that it might be a taxable perk” has to be about the worst.
