Is it really possible that GWB and John McCain managed to reduce the Republican Party to such small rump, so dominated by its lunatic fringe, that Sarah Palin could get the nomination in 2012? Maybe. If that happened, I think we’d be looking at Reagan-Mondale numbers, if not Nixon-McGovern or LBJ-Goldwater numbers.
There’s some buzz that the viable candidates (Romney, Huckabee, Jindal) would be willing to let Our Sarah be the sacrificial lamb in a contest that probably isn’t winnable in any case, keeping their powder dry for 2016.
