Philip Butler, who knew John McCain at the Naval Academy and who was a POW with him in Hanoi, says that McCain’s POW record, while praiseworthy, was not exceptional and is no qualification to be President.
He says that many others refused early release, as McCain did, and cites statistics that indicate that the medals he received were commonly awarded to POWs.
He points to McCain’s temper among other reasons to not support McCain.
Butler is peace activist, and so no doubt his testimony and reasoned analysis will be discounted for that reason, but it’s worth reading nevertheless.
