So HHS has issued a draft regulation that defines IUDs and birth control pills as abortion. The concern, of course, is that if the regulation stands, the equation of contraception and abortion might serve as precedent for interpretations of federal and even state laws.

Not surprisingly, dozens of Congressional Democrats, including Barack Obama, “have signed letters of protest blistering the proposal.”

And what of Senator Obama’s opponent, the straight-talking, fearless Arizona Senator, known for standing tall on principle and never pandering?

Obama’s Republican rival, Sen. John McCain, declined to comment.

Now that’s leadership we can believe in!!

This does create a dilemma for McCain: he wants to be seen as a centrist, but he can’t afford to risk the opprobrium of the lords of the radical right.

But no worry: no matter what happens, it will be excellent news for John McCain.
