Whatever their views on the war, few Americans claim not to “support the troops.” Yet outrage over the way returning and discharged troops are treated seems fairly thin on the ground. The Walter Reed scandal was too graphic not to garner a lot of attention, if not for long. But the routine indifference and even hostility to veterans, from the VA and the DOD, is appalling.
Joseph Stiglitz’s new book on the cost of the war has made a splash; his co-author, Linda Bilmes, not so much. On Fresh Air she describes the humiliating obstacle course presented to veterans–especially disabled veterans.
Whether the war costs $3T or the $50B we were told it was going to, we’re a rich enough country to offer veterans the support they deserve; I hope we’re a decent enough country to grant them that respect.
