If the advantage of professional newsgathering organizations over the blogosphere and other forms of on-line informational disintermediation is that the professional outfits have valuable reputations to protect and therefore both the incentives and the resources to filter out complete and utter horsepuckey, how come Lou Dobbs still has a job? To err is human; to insist on error is grossly unprofessional. (Scroll down to the update; recall that Dobbs claimed that, due to illegal immigration, there have been 7000 cases of leprosy in the U.S.over the past three years; the actual number for 2002-2004, per the Centers for Disease Control, was 296.)

Yet somehow I doubt that Dobbs will share the fate of Dan Rather.
