I’ve never been able to understand my leftist friends who admire Fidel Castro, or my rightist friends who admire Augusto Pinochet.
Now it emerges that Pinochet was a crook as well as a murderer and torturer; apparently there is still $160 million in gold bullion in his name at HSBC (the old Hongkong & Shanghai Bank). I wonder whether any of Pinochet’s money made its way into the pockets of American journalists and politicians? That would go some way toward explaining their expressed admiration for the man. I’d hate to think they were sincere in admiring his death squads and torture chambers.
Footnote You’d think that the folks wearing American-flag lapel pins would object to having a foreign dictator order the murder of one of our citizens on the streets of our capital. But in fact Pinochet was a hero to many on the right, including the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal, which vigorously opposed the attempt by Spanish prosecutors to bring him to justice in the late 1990s.
Update HSBC says the documents are fake. If so, that would leave poor Gen. Pinochet with only $28 million in foreign bank accounts.
