House GOP Leaders Unveil New Ethics Plan – New York Times

Hastert, at his news conference, shrugged off criticisms that he had put off action on lobbying reform and was only responding when his own party faced a crisis.

”A year ago most people around Congress couldn’t tell you who Jack Abramoff was,” he said.

Three years ago, David Rosenbaum had it pretty much tied up in a neat package here(paywall); Norquist, the tribes, DeLay, the Marianas, pretty much everything. Of course the Times is just your lying liberal media, and there was so much money still on the table, golf balls to hit, and expensive projects afoot. Even now, can we really be sure there’s a problem until Abramoff has been indicted, convicted and served his sentence? After all, he could be pardoned, and that would mean none of this actually happened! Why is Hastert being so hasty to make trouble here?
