Ms. Malkin deserves recognition for her extremely timely insight, and I want to apologize for Mark’s failure to point it out. She has recognized the administration’s pattern of appointing incompetent cronies where they can do a lot of damage before the end of Bush’s second term. In fact she has figured it out before some other people, and it would be completely wrong to say (as some meanspirited readers are about to do) that she’s the last person on the planet who can read to get it. For example, and here I’m afraid Mark has made another grievous error, she has figured it out before Reynolds, whose post quite carefully takes no position on the matter, merely pointing to Malkin. Perhaps he’s leaving it to readers to admire his judicious restraint and continued deliberation on such a tricky call.
