Mike O’Hare offers the following maxim:

Never buy art from a gallery with a street-level shop window.

A gallery paying for a storefront has to make up the extra rent somehow: either extra markups or added volume. So you’re either paying too much or buying more or less what everyone else is buying, or both. The art you want in your living room is not the that will catch the eye of busy passers-by.
