It wouldn’t have been nearly as impressive if I’d been expecting it. Hiking along in the Santa Monica Mountains conservancy land this afternoon just after sunset, I turned to my right (just east of Northeast) and saw the full moon half-risen over the San Gabriels on the other side of the San Fernando Valley.

The sky was still blue, but the mountains were orange-pink with the sunset. The moon looked huge, as it does near the horizon, and I was struck by how Picassoesque the Man in the Moon is. But the scene was pure Ansel Adams, which is the best thing I can think of to say about Ansel Adams.
